Overview of the LASIK Procedure
LASIK has become the most popular and successful vision correction procedure worldwide. LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) surgery permanently changes the shape of the cornea. It can markedly decrease the dependency on glasses or contact lenses for many patients. Every cornea has it's own fingerprint that makes it different than any other cornea in the world. With Wavefront-Optimized treatments using the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q 1010 Laser, we can treat each corneal fingerprint differently. Results are usually much better than standard excimer laser treatments, giving better uncorrected vision postoperatively. Dr. Stanley Braverman has performed thousands of LASIK Vision Correction Procedures on South Florida, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami LASIK patients. We now have an Allegretto Wave Eye-Q 1010 excimer laser in our office and do the LASIK procedure in our own humidity controlled operating room at the Braverman Eye Center.
The surgery is performed on the cornea (It provides most of the focusing power when light enters the eye) using a topical anesthetic (drops in the eye). The procedure involves folding back a thin layer of corneal tissue (corneal flap) with a microkeratome (a surgical instrument much like a carpenter's plane). Once the flap has been made and folded back, a thin layer of internal corneal tissue is removed with an Excimer laser. Unlike most lasers that produce heat, an Excimer laser removes tissue with little thermal damage or scarring to adjacent tissue. For this reason, it is an excellent device to reshape the cornea (the clear membrane on the front of the eye).
After the LASIK treatment in Ft. Lauderdale / Miami, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back into place, usually without the need for stitches. The removal of thin layers of tissue causes the center of the cornea to:
- Flatten in the case of myopia (nearsightedness)
- Steepen in the case of hyperopia (farsightedness)
- Become more rounded in the case of astigmatism
As a result, the focusing power of the cornea improves! Many Miami / Fort Lauderdale LASIK patients who have received treatment at Braverman Eye Center now enjoy excellent vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Most of our Ft. Lauderdale and Miami laser eye surgery patients who receive the laser vision correction procedure can see well enough to drive or participate in sport-related activities without corrective lenses.
In addition to correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism by way of laser eye surgery, Braverman Eye Center surgeons have also helped many Fort Lauderdale and Miami cataract surgery patients regain their vision. After the procedure, cataracts patients are stunned with the amazing results.
